The article analyses tendencies in the formation and development of global media corporations and multimedia conglomerates, using the example of the 200-year history of grounding the Swedish media concern Bonnier. The author focuses on the historical basis of a certain media monopoly, which became a major actor in the Swedish media market. Traditions and family philosophy had an influence throughout the entire period of the media concern’s existence. In the case of Bonnier, clear family relations and traditions are traced. For 200 years, the media business has been given from generation to generation, which has already become a tradition for Sweden. The Bonnier family has developed a motivation to preserve and develop media enterprises. This research is important and quite interesting, as it touches on the depths of world journalism and analyses the philosophy of ownership. The evolution of grounding the biggest Swedish media monopolist, which has gone through different stages of development and covers all types of media is traced. The concern has experienced stagnations, threats of existence loss and reputation risks. However, having withstood competition, it has become stronger. Today it gets billions in profits. The dominant strategy of the Bonnier family is to develop the main business by constant accumulation of competence in various media sector branches. Representatives of this family have formed a legacy for future generations, thus grounding a long-term perspective of ownership. This is a vivid example of the fact that the media oligarchy in Sweden has been formed for centuries. These are stable traditions which are familiar to the society. Business was the main priority for the family, and the media business was only an additional interest, since the main attention was focused on industrial enterprises and banks. In such a way, a conglomerate was created. This article studies the development of book publishing and the publishing concern “Dagens Nyheter”. Unity and continuity were a basis of the Bonnier family’s ownership philosophy. The family has maintained a precise order of succession, when younger members are able to follow in the footsteps of the older generation and fruitfully collaborate with them. Therefore, inheritance is crucial in family-owned media enterprises that have existed for several generations, and the connection between family and media is extremely strong.
