The purpose of the research is to identify the role of the “neo-mask” and “anti-mask” phenomena in the art of dance of the 20th – early 21st century and the emotional and bodily intelligence formation of a modern choreographer. Methodology. The application of historical, comparative and art methods contributed to the conduct of scientifically objective research. Scientific novelty. The concepts of “neo-mask” and “anti-mask” were introduced into the choreographic art sphere, the processes of transforming the role of the mask and forming the prerequisites for the development of the “emotional-bodily intelligence” concept in the choreographers’ performances of the modernist and postmodern direction were analyzed. Conclusions. The term “neo-mask” in modern choreography can be used to describe a visual image that has an open face but a cloth-covered body or the use of fabric to cover the face and body together. By “anti-mask” we mean “exposure” of a person’s psycho-emotional problems, complete freedom of emotional and bodily manifestations in dance with minimal use of costume, make-up, props. It is noted that the adaptation of man to the paradigm of world perception from contemplative to personal led to the actualization of emotional and bodily intelligence as a component of the choreographers’ stage producing activity and dancers’ performance. The need to open a discourse on questions about the three-dimensional nature of the human world (spirit, soul, body) was stated, which today is understood as “physicality”. Now in stage culture, the philosophy of perception of not the “dancing body” but the “physicality of the im age” is spreading. The task of modern choreographic art is to open for people (both participants of dance performances and spectators) the possibilities of conscious living of their lives, removing a superficial mask, and providing awareness of personal responsibility for life through the creation and demonstration of modern images. The subject and concept of “mask” in the art of choreography have undergone a transformation from the use of masks to protect and replace the image of the body to a conscious relationship “I and the body” in the development of the emotional intelligence of the choreographer and the spectator.
