More than twenty travel essays about Italy, containing Ukrainian allusions, were analysed. It has been found that among the striking indirect and direct Ukrainian allusions and comparisons, the following conventional groups can be distinguished: 1) brief excursions into Ukrainian history and some historical inclusions; 2) the use of Ukrainian realities in comparisons, references to Ukrainian writers and quotes from their works that are in tune with the mood of the authors; 3) reflections on the influence of Italian culture and art on Ukrainian culture; 4) the perception of Ukraine by Italians and the «Ukrainisation» of the names of Italian artists by Western Ukrainian authors. It is revealed that leading Western Ukrainian periodicals of the first third of the twentieth century, such as «Literaturno-Naukovyi Vistnyk» («Literary Scientific Herald»), «Dilo» («Act»), «Novyi Chas» («New Time»), «Chas» («Time»), and «Nazustrich» («Towards»), systematically published travel essays with Ukrainian allusions. However, the editorial policy of publications regarding the publication of travel essays varied. However, the editorial policy of publications regarding travel essays publication was different. Most of these magazines published travel essays by authors of various specialties, which contributed to multi-vector views and emotional perceptions of the historical, artistic, and spiritual world of Italy, but «Literaturno-Naukovyi Vistnyk» and «Novyi Chas» contained travel essays exclusively by their editors, which significantly narrowed the breadth of views and the diversity of the emotional background. In the travel essays of famous scientists, artists, and journalists such as Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, Gavriil Kostelnyk, Osyp Nazaruk, Mykhailo Posatskyi, Sviatoslav Hordynskyi, Hryhorii Smolskyi, Mykhailo Ostroverkh, Mykola Trotskyi, and others, Ukrainian allusions are clearly visible, which contributed to the kinship of our people and their history with other nations, their cultures, and allowed Ukrainians to feel themselves a part of European civilisation.
