Часопис «Свобода» (США) про життя і творчість Лесі Українки

Abstract

Часопис «Свобода», який уже майже сто тридцять років виходить у США, є важливим джерелом для вивчення проблематики української еміграції. Вагоме місце в цьому контексті посідають статті про Лесю Українку, зокрема на тему вшанування її пам’яті в колі діаспори. Мета дослідження – крізь призму публікацій видатної поетеси й драматургині і матеріалів про неї в газеті «Свобода» з’ясувати їхню проблематику, підстави й час написання, а також їхню роль у формуванні змісту культурно-мистецького життя діаспори та національно-державницької ідеології в середовищі української еміграційної спільноти. Головним методом досягнення мети став аналіз понад тисячі матеріалів часопису «Свобода». Їхні хронологічні межі такі: перша публікація (тема освіти в тогочасній Волині) – листопад 1898-го, остання (тема відзначення 150-річного ювілею поетеси) – квітень 2021-го. Таким чином, опрацьовано масив маловідомих публікацій, з’ясовано їхнє жанрово-тематичне наповнення, зокрема установлено те, що вагомою частиною історико літературної й бібліографічної спадщини діаспори стали заходи (літературно-мистецька хроніка) з ушанування пам’яті Лесі Українки; публікації поетичних і драматичних творів письменниці; театральні постановки за її творами на сцені театрів української діаспори; діяльність організацій, які іменовано на честь видатної українки; факти з біографії Лесі Українки; місця перебування поетеси (краєзнавчий аспект); публікації її творів у перекладах чужими мовами; відомості про її оточення (від Косачів – до Драгоманових); організація заходів, спрямованих на побудову пам’ятників Лесі Українці в США і Канаді; огляд книжкових видань творів поетеси і про неї, які вийшли поза Україною, тощо. Важливим складником цього дослідження стала підготовка хронологічного покажчика матеріалів за темою.

The “Svoboda” newspaper, which has been published in the United States for almost one hundred and thirty years, is an important source for studying the problems of Ukrainian emigration. An important place in this context is occupied by articles about Lesia Ukrainka, in particular, on the topic of commemorating her memory in the diaspora. The purpose of the study is to examine the publications of the prominent poetess and playwright and materials about her in the “Svoboda” newspaper to determine their issues, the reasons and time of their writing, as well as their role in shaping the content of the cultural and artistic life of the diaspora and national-state ideology among the Ukrainian emigration community. The main method of achieving this purpose was the analysis of more than a thousand materials from the “Svoboda” newspaper. Their chronological boundaries are as follows: the first publication (the topic of education in Volyn at that time) – November 1898, the last (the topic of celebrating the 150th anniversary of the poetess) – April 2021. Thus, an array of little-known publications has been processed, and their genre and thematic content has been determined, in particular, it has been established that a significant part of the historical, literary, and bibliographic heritage of the diaspora was the events (literary and artistic chronicle) to honour Lesia Ukrainka’s memory; poetry and drama publications by the writer; theatrical productions based on her works on the stage of the Ukrainian diaspora theatres; the organisations activities named after the prominent Ukrainian; facts from Lesia Ukrainka’s biography; places where the poetess lived (local history aspect); publications of her works in translations into foreign languages; information about her environment (from the Kosachs to the Drahomanovs); organisation of events aimed at building monuments to Lesia Ukrainka in the United States and Canada; book editions review of works by and about the poetess published outside Ukraine, etc.
