The topicality of this article is due to insufficient scientific understanding of the history of Ukrainian press publishing in the second half of the 20th century. The functioning specifics of journals, their main tasks, thematic dominants, value orientations, etc. remain poorly studied. The object of the study is the journal “Folk Creativity and Ethnography”, which was published in 1957–1991. The aim of the study is to identify features of the editorial policy of the journal “Folk Creativity and Ethnography” under conditions of ideological control, as well as to clarify its role in the cultural and information space of Soviet Ukraine during the specified period. The research uses a complex of general scientific and special methods, namely: analytical, systemic, content analysis, contextual, etc. The scientific novelty of this article grounds on determining main tasks of the “Folk Creativity and Ethnography” journal (based on editorial materials), clarifying the transformation of its thematic and material content in different time periods (the so-called “thaw”, “stagnation”, “perestroika”) of the totalitarian state, the influence of censorship and liberalisation processes on preserving and popularising achievements of folk creativity and ethnography, the specifics of functioning of scientific journalism as an important source for the study of Ukrainian culture and the development of scientific periodicals, as well as the media’s role in the preservation and rethinking of the national heritage. The conclusions of this research indicate that the activities of the “Folk Creativity and Ethnography” journal took place in the context of total ideological control over the existing information: the publication was an expression of the party-Soviet ideology, which determined its editorial policy, thematic content, discursive strategies, combination of ideological and scientific functions; along with ideologically biased publications, the journal regularly published thorough folklore and ethnographic materials, supported and developed the scientific area. The journal “Folk Creativity and Ethnography” is viewed not only as an instrument of the Soviet information policy, but also as a unique means of preserving folklore and ethnographic materials.
