For the first time in the Ukrainian journalism studies, this article focuses on journalism as a media system in the aspect of clearly expressed national character. Consequences of the formation of such a system in structure, peculiarities of editorial policies and problem- thematic diversity of the content are traced. Reasons why this issue has not been studied in Ukraine for a long time are clarified. The analysis grounds on the “four press theories” of American researchers, which are widespread in the West but are actually not tolerated in Ukraine, in comparison with the practice and legislative framework of the Ukrainian journalism. The author comes to the conclusion that modern Ukrainian journalism still does not meet the criteria of the social responsibility theory, and in fact, does not yet belong to the system of free society media. Till today, even despite legalised declarations, it bears features of a semi- nationalised, semi-oligarchic, semi-authoritarian one — with a weakly protected legislative field, outdated material and technical base, systemic violations of journalism standards developed by world practice, low professional level of many direct participants in the complex process of journalism creation. This article offers an authorial classification of Ukrainian journalism by types and main typological markers, close to the European one, for the first time. These are four types: press, radio, television, network (an alternative is Internet journalism). The author presents four weighty arguments in support of this version: optimal approximation of different “points of view” of the world scientific thought in the journalism sphere; introduction of the theory of the Ukrainian journalism into the world context; affirmation of traditions of the national journalism chosen by our predecessors in difficult socio-political conditions; necessity in protecting living processes of the national term creation from real threats to the Ukrainian language in the status of the state one — the long-term dominance of russification, legalised calque, and now — latinisation. Additionally, for the first time, the article substantiates a number of other typological characteristics of the Ukrainian journalism, namely: editorial programme and problem- thematic direction, specifics of literary styles, linguistic feature, affiliation to the founder and others.
