The article examines the peculiarities of the concept of «news» perception during the war. To find out the probabilistic characteristics of the audience’s attitude to news, the following research tasks were defined: 1) to collect empirical material by obtaining associative reactions to the stimulus word «news»; 2) to determine the associative field structure; 3) to analyze the cells of values formed according to semantic accents; 4) to attempt to interpret the results. The main methods that we used in this case: a controlled associative experiment, a random sampling method. The study found that more than half of the associative reactions reflected a general idea of the news; a significant proportion of responses had neutral or balanced assessments, reactions-«definitions», formal features of the news, and parallels with the journalistic profession, the media system and the means of communication. Less than half of the reactions, in particular to the content of the news, were subjective individual impressions, showed an indifferent attitude, and were often emotionally coloured. In the second part, three large groups of reactions were identified – positive and negative directions, as well as reflections directly related to the war. Thus, the assumption that the dominance of military topics in the media affected the perception of news by Ukrainians was confirmed. This is proven primarily by the painful impressions from the news, shaken emotions, and feelings caused by media information. Despite this, in general, the experiment participants demonstrated the ability to think calmly and rationally about everything related to the news. A positive attitude even prevails, which may indicate certain optimism in society and trust in the mass media. The depicted structure of the associative field can be clarified in the process of further scientific investigations; in particular, additional study on the issue of the influence of prevailing stereotypes and public attitudes on the responses of the participants of similar experiments.
